Environmental group plants small seeds for big change

Global Action Plan gains €4,000 seed fund
Global Action Plan’s mission is to bring people together to create practical solutions to immediate environmental problems, and community involvement is the key. That translates as getting everybody to pitch in and get things sorted, and in five of Ballymun’s schools they’ve found an army of willing accomplices. We were able to help with a €4,000 grant through the Heritage Council.
Take two examples of what’s been happening in Ballymun. Virgin Mary Girls’ National School, where the Action Team has set up a wormery, hedgerow and butterfly patch, won its first Green Flag, as well as reducing the amount of school landfill waste by 65% in under a year. Amazing!
Meanwhile Gaelscoil Bhaile Munna joined forces with the community around the school to plant and look after common green areas, and have been working hard to push awareness of energy conservation in the school and outside. Cutting down on the amount of computers and gadgets left on by almost 25% has saved enormously on bills and pollution too. They’ve reduced the amount of lights left on needlessly by 12%, which strikes us as very bright.
