CorrAcla Teo is a Community Development Programme and resource centre based in Achill, Co Mayo. Its aim is to provide services to improve and enhance the lives of all in this rural community through identifying and responding to changing community needs.
Located at the entrance to Achill Island, the centre caters to the needs of young and old, newcomers and returned emigrants to the community on Achill Island and the mainland.
CorrAcla provides information and citizen advice, a youth information point, assistance with form fi lling and a listening ear if needed. Art and Flower Arranging classes run weekly for all age groups. “Those who partake in the classes don’t just learn a skill but enjoy the opportunity to meet with others, to relax and regain self esteem” says Genevieve Grealis, Centre Co-ordinator.
The Centre links up with other outreach programmes such as VEC back to education and the money and budgeting advice service. An after school homework group and a youth art study group also avail of the facility.
Set up in 1993, the board of management is run by local volunteers, with core funding of €89,454 in 2008 from the National Lottery and the Dept of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. CorrAcla Teo is one of over 180 Community Development Programmes throughout Ireland which received €24 million last year, part-funded by the National Lottery.
